Microsoft Denies Monitoring Skype Calls After Banning Xbox Users For Bad Language

Infowars: Xbox users have complained that Microsoft was banning them from using Skype or the Xbox Upload Studio because of “past behaviour.” The censorship stemmed from the company targeting people who used bad language in their uploaded videos. Some Xbox users expressed concern at why Microsoft was applying the ban to Skype accounts when accessed via the Xbox console, leading to fears that the company was monitoring their private conversations.  A respondent to an article on Gizmodo points out that one of the bans was applied for someone solely using Skype, remarking, “So yes they are listening, or someone complained about the person’s behaviour.”

Although Microsoft is moving towards encrypting all its Internet traffic due to “suspicions that the NSA is intercepting traffic within its private networks,” the company was deeply embroiled in the NSA wiretapping scandal, allowing the snooping agency backdoor access to spy on users of its services. In May it emerged that Microsoft “regularly scans Skype message contents for signs of fraud.” As the Edward Snowden leaks confirmed, Skype audio conversations “can be wiretapped by American intelligence agencies,” despite previously having been considered resistant to interception. The Xbox One’s array of microphones and video cameras can distinguish between six different voices in a room while responding to voice commands and reading skeletal and muscular movements. The device can even tell if someone is looking at or away from the television.

Costa Rica being sued for protecting its rainforests

Latin American Bureau: Calgary-based Infinito Gold is suing the Costa Rican government for over $1 billion, because Costa Rica rejected Infinito’s plan to build an open-pit gold mine in a pristine tropical forest. Over 75 per cent of Costa Ricans are against the proposed mine, and in 2011, Costa Rica banned all open-pit metal mining in the country. Instead of respecting Costa Rica's democratic decision to reject this project, Infinito is using lawsuits and intimidation to get its way. It already tried to get a judge dismissed who might not be favourable to the project, and sued two Costa Rican university professors for critical comments about the project. Now Infinito is trying to sue Costa Rica in secret courts.

Infinito has caused $10 million in damages to 300 hectares of pristine rainforest because it proceeded to clear-cut forests to build its mine without proper authorization. Costa Ricans want reparations from Infinito for unlawful environmental damages.

Washington uses typhoon aid to push for Philippine military bases

World Socialist Web Site: At a press conference with visiting US congressional delegates on Monday, Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario said the US military deployment in the country after Typhoon Haiyan revealed the need to conclude basing arrangements for US forces in the Philippines. Del Rosario said the massive US military deployment underlined the need for the “framework agreement that we are working on with the United States for increased rotational presence.” He claimed that “humanitarian assistance and disaster relief” would be “a very major aspect of the agreement.”

US congressmen Chris Smith, Trent Franks and Al Green were visiting the Philippines, ostensibly to coordinate US relief efforts. They each spoke at the press conference on the need for a deal to allow US military bases in the country. The basing deal would enable the US military to station, on a rotational basis, between 4,000 and 4,500 troops in the country.

There is no humanitarian agenda whatsoever in the construction of these bases. They are all proposed to be built on coasts facing China and the South China Sea, and not along the path of typhoons, which approach the Philippines from the southeast.

Vitamin B12 and other B vitamins may help alleviate depression

NaturalNews: Adding vitamins to your diet can help reduce the feeling of depression, winter blues or seasonal affective disorder (SAD). B vitamins, especially vitamin B12, have been shown to help those suffering from feelings of anxiety or depression. Simply adding nutritional supplements can help lift the blues, especially during stressful periods of life. Many vitamins can be sourced from foods, but some, like vitamin B12, are difficult to source from food, so vitamin supplements are suggested. Winter depression and seasonal affective disorder are not only mental conditions. B vitamins are major contributors to how the brain and nervous system function, so getting proper nutrients in the diet can improve mood.

Vitamin B12 is needed to make red blood cells and nerves, and natural sources of vitamin B12 are only found in animal products, such as meat, poultry, eggs and dairy, and cannot be made in the body. As there are no vegetarian sources of vitamin B12, vegetarians need to supplement. Stomach acid is needed to absorb vitamin B12 from foods, and many people do not have enough stomach acid to break down foods in order to obtain this vital nutrient, especially as aging decreases the amount of stomach acid secretion.

Fluoride row: Australian shire council votes to uphold ban in water supply

The Guardian: Byron shire council in Australia has voted to uphold a ban on adding fluoride to the area’s drinking water, after a campaign by local residents and doctors. The council voted 5-3 in favour of the ban. At the council meeting last Thursday a petition containing signatures of local residents was submitted. The petition was titled “We, the people of the Byron Bay Shire, strongly object to having our water poisoned with FLUORIDE!”

Another letter addressed to New South Wales chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant and signed by several doctors also opposed the proposal to add fluoride. Citing “heated controversy and disagreement” in scientific and medical communities, the letter claimed it was “imprudent to initiate further fluoridation of public water supplies until such time as modern data can either substantiate or refute the alleged benefits and the safety or otherwise is established.”

In August the nearby Ballina shire council overturned moves to ban the additive. Previously, the nearby Lismore voted to ban the process, and another 17 Queensland councils have taken steps this year to stop adding fluoride to drinking water. Under Australian law such decisions rest with councils.

Medical Marijuana For Your Furry Friends

CBS New York: When it comes to sick pets many owners will go to great lengths to help them feel better. Now, some have started to take matters into their own hands and have turned to a remedy that isn’t even legal in some states. Rowyn Capers’ dog, “Luna,” was suffering from late-stage lymphoma and was put on an intense schedule of chemotherapy. The treatments came with devastating side effects.

“Her lymph nodes were like golf balls and she was coughing constantly and she couldn’t breathe and I just thought it’s time to say goodbye,” Capers said. She gave Luna medical marijuana to help ease her suffering. The cannabis came in the form of a concentrated oil in a capsule. Capers said the results have been remarkable.

Certified animal behaviourist Darlene Arden is a strong advocate for the use of medical marijuana on pets. She said “I think we can now see marijuana for exactly what it is and what it can do. Not a street drug but a legitimate medication to be used under proper supervision.”

The ASPCA disagrees. Dr Amy Greenbaum said “We don’t have enough data to know how it can be used effectively and we currently have a lot of really good modalities to treat pain using multiple different drugs and therapies”.

Genetically Modified Politicians

The Ecologist: The official UK government policy on Genetically Modified (GM) crops is “precautionary, evidence-based and sensitive to public concerns”. Who are they kidding?

Last year the GM companies, having met with ministers at a little-publicised 'Growing for Growth' conference, started another push to promote GM. They were immediately backed up by Environment Minister Owen Paterson insisting that GM food will sort our problems - no worries. He was followed in July by David Cameron saying Europe was "being left behind" even though the previous month it had been disclosed that GM food is banned from all the restaurants and cafes in the Palace of Westminster, and he himself was refusing to say whether he'd feed GM food to his family.

Chivvied by the biotech people, Paterson made a further push but the campaign was spoilt in January by a report stating that almost 50% of the world's food is wasted. The hunger is a result of how we manage the world, not the earth's inability to feed us. Perhaps the biotech companies were encouraged by a survey published in March last year, showing that more people were now "unconcerned" about GM crops and food. The trouble with surveys like this is that you can point to the bit that supports your opinion and, if you are the Environment Secretary, Prime Minister or perhaps a biotech CEO, happily ignore the rest.

So while both ministers and media trumpeted the news that more people (25%) were now unconcerned about GM food (up from 17% in 2003), they ignored the other 75%, especially the 46% that remain concerned about the technology and its risks.

In June this year, a recent survey by Which? found that 71 per cent of Britons believe GM food, and meat from animals fed on GM food, should be banned from supermarkets. A further 15 per cent are "undecided". In other words, just over one in ten thinks it's a good idea. And a YouGov poll this year found that only 21% of the public supported GM food. Further, despite the hard sell by Paterson and Cameron, 43% of people said they "were completely against" the government promoting GM technology. A survey of farmers published at the same time (funded by Barclays in collaboration with Farmers Weekly), found that even farmers are reluctant to grow GM crops and only 15% of them would eat GM food. They're at one with Westminster there then, with its reluctance to eat the stuff.

Canada’s Approval of GM Fish Eggs Threatens Environment

Canadian Biotechnology Action Network: Canada’s approval of commercial production of genetically modified Atlantic salmon eggs is an alarming decision that sets Canada up to be the source of global environmental risk, says the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network and Islanders Say No to Frankenfish. “We are extremely disappointed and alarmed that our government has approved the production of GM fish eggs. GM salmon egg production in Canada endangers the future of wild Atlantic salmon around the world,” said Lucy Sharratt of the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network. “It’s simply crazy that the world’s first GM fish eggs are now going to be coming from Canada, and it’s unacceptable that this incredibly important decision was made in total secrecy and without any public consultation.”

The Environment Canada approval, published on 23rd November in the Canada Gazette, is the first government approval for the company AquaBounty. The company has asked for approval of the GM Atlantic salmon for human consumption in the U.S., based on a plan to produce the GM fish eggs in Prince Edward Island, Canada and ship them to Panama for grow-out and processing. The facility already produces GM salmon eggs for research, which are shipped to the company’s Panama location for further research and development. If fully approved for production and consumption, the salmon would be the first GM food animal in the world.

The Canadian Biotechnology Action Network has repeatedly asked Environment Canada, the Minister of the Environment, and AquaBounty to say if an assessment for approval of the GM fish eggs was underway. All parties refused to answer this question.

Amazon sells fake, counterfeit nutritional products to unsuspecting consumers

NaturalNews: A Natural News investigation has confirmed that Amazon.com is functioning as a retail "front" for a rapidly-expanding list of dietary supplement counterfeiters, who profit by exploiting the Amazon.com trust factor to sell fake products to unsuspecting Amazon customers. This counterfeit operation does not appear to be the intention of Amazon.com itself, which is a widely-celebrated online retailer, but rather a result of Amazon's inability to adequately police the tens of thousands of third-party sellers who sell products through the site.

Natural News has learned and confirmed that counterfeit dietary supplement companies are easily able to repeatedly and successfully sell a multitude of counterfeit nutritional products through Amazon.com. They are currently unable to distinguish between legitimate (original) manufacturers of a product versus a counterfeit manufacturer of a fake product. Amazon.com actually lends counterfeit products a high "trust factor" by assigning high star ratings to products which are wholly counterfeit. It has allowed counterfeit companies to "hijack" its anti-counterfeiting policy, resulting in counterfeiters getting original manufacturers banned from Amazon as if they were counterfeiters. In other words, do not buy nutritional products from third-party sellers on Amazon.com To be clear, Amazon.com is an impressive company in many ways. It excels at inventory logistics, a positive online shopping experience and an impressive I.T. backbone which keeps the company humming along.

However, Natural News received testimony from a highly-respected nutritional product manufacturer who has been the victim of Amazon.com's anti-counterfeiting policy. We have confirmed the identity and authenticity of this source. They told Natural News, "...an unknown seller reported us to Amazon for selling [our own] counterfeit products... and Amazon banned us." Even worse, Amazon.com apparently upheld the ban even after this original manufacturer provided exhaustive documentation proving they were the manufacturer of the product. This grave error on the part of Amazon.com resulted in a direct loss of reputation for this supplement manufacturer.

Npower to slash 1,000 jobs, outsource call centre

The Telegraph: Britain’s giant energy supplier Npower will announce restructuring plans under which hundreds of jobs will be slashed. The plans include outsourcing the energy suppliers’ call centre operations to a third party in the UK with the back-office operations offshored to India. The restructuring will affect 2,000 staff, but actual job losses will be maintained to around 1,000 with Npower call center in Thornaby, near Middlesbrough, "almost certain" to close. The restructuring will follow a string of cost-saving announcements from Npower since RWE - its German owner - earlier this month announced plans to axe 6,750 jobs across Europe, and warned of lower than expected profits for 2013.

Npower has received almost three times as many complaints as its closest rival, becoming the most complained about energy firm in the UK.
