Scrap plan to extend statin use, say doctors

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence published draft guidance in February calling for their use to be extended to save more lives. It could mean another five million people in England and Wales using them on top of seven million who already do.

But in a letter to NICE and ministers, the experts expressed concern about the medicalisation of healthy people. The letter said the draft advice was overly reliant on industry-sponsored trials, which "grossly underestimate adverse effects". And it added: "The benefits in a low-risk population do not justify putting approximately five million more people on drugs that will then have to be taken lifelong."

Women are having fewer kids, and demographers don't know why

U.S. fertility is not recovering from the financial crisis — and demographers aren’t sure why. The fertility rate fell to a record low 62.9 births per 1,000 women aged 15-44 in 2013, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. The total number of births, at 3.96 million, inched up by a mere 4,000 from 2012, the first increase since the financial crisis. But the total fertility rate, or TFR, the average number of children a woman would have during her child-bearing years, fell to just 1.86, the lowest rate in 27 years. TFR is considered the best metric of fertility. A TFR of 2.1 represents a stable population, with children replacing parents as they die off.

Demographers expected the fertility rate to fall during recession, as financially strapped families put off childbearing. But what has surprised some demographers is both the depth of the decline and the fact that fertility has continued to drop even over the course of the country's five years of slow but steady recovery. The rate has fallen steadily each year since 2007, when it stood at 2.1 percent.

The result: There would have been at least 1.3 million more births during the recession and recovery if fertility had remained at 2007 levels, calculated Kenneth Johnson, a demographer at the University of New Hampshire. Johnson noted that the excess of births over deaths is now the lowest it has been in 35 years. There were more deaths than births in a third of U.S. counties last year. “More people died than were born in Maine for the second year in a row and West Virginia again had more deaths than births as it has for a number of years,” Johnson wrote.

Comment from Scott Tips, TheNHF.com: “Will someone please tell these idiots that increasing toxins, endocrine disrupters, contaminants, xeno-estrogens, artificial sweeteners, fluoride, and other filth in our food, drink, and air coupled with reduced nutrient intake will cause reduced fertility?”

The Geologic Concern That Could Derail UK Shale Before It Begins

A technical paper prepared by David K. Smythe BSc, PhD (Emeritus Professor of Geophysics, University of Glasgow) for the House of Lords Economic Affairs Select Committee on UK shale adds an important geologic concern to the list of headwinds facing UK shale development.

This report prepared in late-2013 makes the case that the UK shale basins are heavily faulted - from the shale layer right to the surface - which is in contrast to those of the US. The author notes that these pre-existing faults could provide a fast-track pathway for frac- fluid and produced gas to escape upwards into water aquifers and the surface. The author argues that fracking should be banned in areas of complex faulted geology, which in effect means an overall ban covering the entire UK.

The recent images of a giant 4-mile long mudslide shown to you on CNN, were not really of a mudslide, says Youtuber

WESTERN COLORADO (INTELLIHUB) — “There is no mud in the whole damn thing, there is not even a puddle”, said dutchsinse, a popular environmental investigative Youtuber, referring to a secretive fracking operation that was recently botched. “I went and verified the area which they basically have fracked the hell out of the area”, dutchsinse said, continuing to explain how the U.S. government teamed up with Exxon Mobil in the area.

What you have actually been seeing on the news, sold as a 4-mile long mudslideis not a mudslide, it’s a massive fracking eruption as they have been pumping high amounts of high pressure CO2 into the ground for an extended period of time.  Talks of evacuation have been promoted on CNN, said dutchsinse, despite the fact that there has been no rain or snow pack in the area. “It’s all a bunch of B.S.”, said dutchsinse.

Flaming water wells? High methane levels in Texas water linked to fracking

Testing of methane concentration in water of Parker County, Texas indicates a link between the dangerously high levels of natural gas in local water supply and hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, operations in the gas-rich Barnett Shale, scientists say. Parker County resident Steve Lipsky has known for years his water has been contaminated with high levels of methane gas. Last year, he filed a complaint with state oil and gas regulators at the Texas Railroad Commission. More recently, news broadcaster WFAA even went so far as to “ignite” local well water to highlight the issue.

After measuring gas content in his water well, state regulators said that while methane concentration in Lipsky’s water was up, the chemical makeup of the methane was inconclusive. Thus, the source of the gas remains a mystery, according to the state. The Railroad Commission’s tests found Lipsky’s water contained 8.6 milligrams per litre of methane, not quite the federal limit of 10. Yet separate tests by a researcher at the University of Texas-Arlington found 83 milligrams per litre in the water, an incredibly high count.

“What we can say right now is that those are dangerous -- that's a dangerous level," Zac Hildebrand told WFAA.

Five benefit changes the government don't want you to know about

It used to be that when politicians wanted to bury bad news they’d orchestrate its release to time with a distracting event. Seeing Iain Duncan Smith publicly criticized for wasting at least £140 million of public money over Universal Credit at the start of this month, it struck me how we’ve slowly reached another level. “Unmitigated disaster”? “Alarmingly weak”? These words were used to describe Universal Credit but could easily have been levelled at a number of largely unreported changes to the benefit system. Nowadays, bad news is buried by even worse news. The sheer volume of inefficient and unethical changes to social security this Government has enacted means some of it doesn’t even get noticed. Which, for a set of politicians hacking at vulnerable people’s support systems, is worryingly convenient.

1. Disabled people denied a key benefit have had their right to appeal reduced  - On 28 October the Department of Work and Pensions introduced a major change to the appeal process to the main disability benefit for people who are too ill to work, Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). If a claimant wishes to appeal against a decision that they are not entitled to ESA, they must now ask the DWP to reconsider the decision before lodging an official appeal – and receive no money in the meantime.

Dubbed the ‘mandatory reconsideration’ stage, not only will the claimant not receive ESA income during this period, there will be no time limit on how long it will take. People with disabilities and illness are being left with no income for an indefinite period of time. This would be bad enough for a system that works. It’s particularly alarming for a system where 40 per cent of appeals overturn the original decision.

The DWP response is the claimant can claim Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) during this appeal stage. Campaigners tell me, however, many disabled people say they won’t apply for JSA due to the fear that doing so will be interpreted by the DWP as evidence they are indeed fit for work.

2. Long-term sick people are having their benefits sanctioned ... for being sick - The increase in sanctions placed on claimants of jobseeker’s allowance has been widely publicised, with most headlines on the issue last month dedicated to statistics revealing that nearly 600,000 have had adverse benefit sanctions taken against them. Less publicised is the fact 45,000 sanction decisions have been made against sick and disabled people. This means the number is set to have doubled from the year before.

11, 000 sick and disabled people had their ESA penalized in just seven months – either for not participating in work related activity or missing a meeting with the Job Centre. 120 disabled people receiving JSA have had their benefits stopped for three years.

3. 50,000 disabled people are being cut out of work - The cocktail of cuts being made to benefits mean the DWP are managing to simultaneously penalize disabled people for not working and stopping them from having a job.  50,000 disabled people could lose their jobs due to the Government removing Disability Living Allowance (DLA), the Disability Benefits Consortium (DBC), an organisation of over fifty leading charities, has found.

One in five disabled people who receive the now scrapped DLA are in work and use the benefit to cover the additional costs that come with that – be it help showering in the morning or a motability vehicle to get to the office.

4. There’s now a one-year limit on hundreds of thousands of people’s sickness benefit - In fact, the government is way ahead of us. They have now ‘time limited’ Employment and Support Allowance – meaning many people who have been found too ill to find work without support can only get the benefit for a year. 700,000 people with long-term sickness or disability have had their benefit taken as a result. The means test is only £7,500 for this change, leaving someone earning barely £8,000 per year having to support themselves and their ill partner.

5. Eviction letters are now including veiled threats to remove people’s children - Depressingly, even the cuts that do gain media attention seem to have certain aspects that remain hidden. It’s well highlighted that policies like the bedroom tax are leaving people unable to pay the rent. Less well publicized is the scale of rent arrears social tenants are finding themselves in – or the tacit threats being used to get monetary blood from the stones. Nearly three quarters of housing association staff say their tenants are falling behind on rent this year, according to a recent Unison survey. Over a third report the main cause is the bedroom tax.

Half of the housing association staff surveyed had seen an increase in tenants being evicted or forced to move out due to financial pressures, Inside Housing reported.

Has your car joined the ‘internet of things’?

Got a car manufactured after 2008? If so be aware, be very aware, that cars made from that date joined "The Internet of Things" club (and people worry about their IP-connected fridge).

Given the proper codes and a cellular network, anybody can access your vehicle and take over control in 2008 and newer vehicles (global not just the USA). If you remember back in 2007 - 2008 Toyota was having "trouble" with their vehicles. Toyota was being black mailed as they refused to cooperate with governments in this effort. Unfortunately they had no choice but to cave in. All the sudden their vehicles work perfectly.

The cellular technology is built directly into your vehicle's computer(s) and cannot be removed. Every vehicle has active GPS tracking from this date forward which cannot be turned off. The only way around this is to rewrite your vehicle's software. In this way, even embedded hardware commands can be over written or disrupted.

On the positive side, intelligence services can utilise these systems to prevent any would-be bank robber from successfully completing their crime. On the negative side, the fiery death of Michael Hastings, a journalist exposing corruption at the highest levels, almost certainly revealed that this technology is also being used for assassinations.

In a video by Motherboard, called “How To Hack a Car”, Matthew Solnik demonstrates completely wireless car hacking, showing that he has full control over steering, braking, acceleration, forward or reverse, or even whether the engine is on.

You’ll also recall the “Cash for Clunkers” – the car scrappage scheme introduced in the UK, following a similar one in the USA, in 2009. This brings an ominous undertone to what we were told was a stimulus exercise for the car industry.

Solar Storm Brewing

When ‘nothing’ happened in 2011, or 2012, in relation to a major solar storm and impact on the planet, most ignored the news a few months ago of NASA announcing the results of an analysis of an event in 2012, which occurred on the dark side of the Sun. That event was a solar eruption followed by a massive magnetic pulse which was actually greater than the Carrington Event of 1859. Of course, the ‘event’ was a non-event in the sense that the resultant magnetic wave rippled out away from Earth and caused no damage.

That event showed that the current relatively inactive Sun could provide some surprises. The Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) missed Earth by 9 days of solar rotation. In other words, had the event occurred nine days later, civilisation as we know it – in other words, ‘the world’ would not now exist. There would be no electricity throughout the industrialised northern hemisphere and probably also the southern too – no water in the taps (requires electric pumps), no transport, no food on the supermarket shelves, no lights in the cities, no global financial transactions and no communications such as newspapers, mobile phones, radio or TV. We would now be in the aftermath – attempting to live with the consequences. Only the simplest and most self-reliant of communities would be relatively immune (like Tibetan nomads or tribal peoples in the Amazon).

The consequences of such an event are now well-known in the media – covered by the National Geographic and several NASA presentations, yet virtually nothing is being done to prepare for such an emergency. This has so concerned the US society of electrical engineers, that they have issued a plea to government – for as little as $2 billion, they believe they could make the electrical grid resilient to such a solar ‘tsunami’, yet the money is not forthcoming. We have no idea what preparations, or lack of them, constitutes the British response, except to say that through the offices of a journalist contact, ecologist Peter Taylor was able to get an appraisal of the situation through to the cabinet office – and onwards to a Parliamentary committee.

Early in 2011, just after publication of the parliamentary hearings, Peter was contacted by the management at IBM’s UK global headquarters and asked to come in and discuss his submission. In that meeting, he was amazed to see that their emergency planning was highly advanced, with the paths of expected magnetic impact mapped onto the planet and, of course, their operations. Peter wants to assure everyone that this issue is taken very seriously by industry, the banks, the military and the government… and they will look after their own (as best they can). What is NOT happening is any kind of emergency preparedness for the public. There are no food or water stores. No EMP ‘hardened’ emergency services. No widespread public knowledge and plan of action.

After the peak of activity in 2012, the solar surface went quiet. The overall magnetic status of the Sun is low compared to the previous cycle peak about 11 years ago. But that is also similar to the status of the Sun when the Carrington Event occurred, and it could be therefore, that low activity on the surface leads to pent-up forces within the solar plasma.

Since Wednesday, NASA has provided data on no less than three X-class flares, with more in the offing: At least two sunspots (AR2080 and AR2087) have unstable 'delta-class' magnetic fields that could erupt at any moment. The source of yesterday's X-flares, AR2087, is particularly potent, and it is turning toward Earth. NOAA forecasters estimate a 60% chance of M-flares and a 30% chance of X-flares on June 11th.

These active sites will rotate into Earth alignment over the next few days. Thus, Peter Taylor has issued his first alert since 2011/2012. There will be little attempt at a public warning. The first many people will know of the event will be the lack of electric light, mobile phone communication and so forth. It is still not known whether these pulses could be strong enough to damage automobile fuel injection systems – hence causing gridlock on the roads.

To confirm, the threat has not gone away. Those scientists and engineers in-the-know take it very seriously. Peter suggests you prepare as best you can, just in case. Create a contingency plan. Know how to navigate and leave the cities. Know where you will be received. Talk to friends – we will all need them. And do it now.
