Doomwatch 55 - Christmas Special live in Plymouth

Doomwatch 55 - Christmas Special live in Plymouth

Wednesday 17th December 8.00pm-9.00pm on www.ukcolumn.org/live

You are invited to join host alex:g and special guest Text Jockey Daisy Jones for the 55th variant of the picture show with sound, DOOMWATCH. We are on-the-road again, this time at The George Inn, Plympton, near Plymouth, for the UK Column Christmas Party. This is our 'review of the year' show, and our special guests will include Brian Gerrish and Mike Robinson of the UK Column.

This variant sees Doomwatch in transition, before moving on to the next stage of the format's evolution. Since its debut in November 2013, the show has been a unique proposition. While Peterborough FM hosted the show and carried the audio signal, you were able to simultaneously see the live antics in both sound and vision on the internet, via broadcast partners in Plymouth, the UK Column. Guests joined the show via video Skype, which added to the visual experience.

Recently, outside broadcasts have also been part of the mix, including three shows from various conferences, and a surreal session live from the Peterborough Camra Beer Festival in August 2014.

"Those outside broadcasts showed us that we could free ourselves from the restrictions that come with being radio-studio-bound", noted Producer and Presenter alex:g. "There are huge developments in broadcasting on the horizon in the next couple of years. We want to move the Doomwatch format to being reliant on seeing us as well as hearing us. In other words, it would be unfair on a radio audience as they wouldn't be able to look at what we are doing."

Initially, the retooled Doomwatch will be seen on the UK Column, back in its 6.00pm to 8.00pm slot on Fridays, from the end of January 2015. The series is also looking to be carried by other services around the UK and across the world.

"I want to thank all the staff and volunteers at Peterborough FM for the parts they have played in helping to establish Doomwatch as a viable format", commented alex:g. "This is the end of the beginning. The future holds many challenges, but it will certainly be interesting times!"

The show's predecessor, Red Alert Radio, clocked up an amazing 40 episodes since it made its debut in January 2013. The format was constantly evolving over its time, with many different presentation line-ups and show structures, as we experimented with the best way to get some very complex news stories over to our audience. However, with a new broadcast slot and a new strategy for gaining influence, this was an ideal time for change.

As previously announced, the big news tonight is that Doomwatch will be changing in the New Year.  We’re not really a radio show anymore. So we want the images you see to be part of the Doomwatch experience, rather than an add-on. However, we are already planning the new vision-led reformatting of Doomwatch, and expect to be broadcasting live from a new home by the end of January.
